Agile Principles : # 5 & 6

Principle #5 – Build projects around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need and trust them to get the job done.

This Agile principle is all about having motivated teams. Agile is both customer and people centric approach. Both are important to deliver quality. Team should feel motivated to work on the backlog/requirements. Any kind of motivation comes from involvement of people. Until unless, people feel involved, they would not be able to contribute fully. Team should be trusted to do their job. Their opinion should be heard.

All team decisions should be taken after consulting everyone on the team or at least proper communication should be done. It should not be one way communication between team and management. Team should feel psychologically safe. They should be able to express their views without any fear. Leadership should make sure to have such environment in place. Team’s roles and skills should be aligned to what they do. There should be no gap in that. Then only people will feel motivated and productive.

Principle #6 – The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.

Its always emphasized that face-to-face communication is the best way. This will make sure that team would have connect with each other, they really work as a team. They share successes and failures. But this concept has taken a new flavor since the covid pandemic. Most of the people started working remotely, video/audio calls replaced in person communication. This is also an effective way to communicate.

This Agile principle encouraging more collaboration between team members. Team should work together, create together. The mode of communication should not be a problem if team is connecting effectively in remote working also. I feel sometimes it is more convenient and gives opportunity to work with people from different locations across globe. So, this is an opportunity in difficulty. Team should try to explore both ways of communication and see what works best for them. Team should decide on it. The end goal is to collaborate and co-create more and more.
